Preparing for your move...
Start early and maintain a timeline! There is a strange phenomenon that I have observed in my 28+ years in the industry known as “time compression” - simply put, the closer move day gets, the faster time moves and the longer simple tasks take to complete! Honest!
See our PACKING TIPS and NON PERMISSABLES pages for some handy information.
Plan as to where the moving van is going to park on each end of the move. See the ACCESS page. Remember that a standard 5-ton sized van has a 22-24’ box on a medium truck frame, so it’s overall length is 33-37’. A 7-ton can be up to 8’ longer. And those are without the ramp the movers will use to get your stuff on and off the truck. Assuming loading/unloading from the rear, plan for a good 50’ of space. Think also of width requirements and height requirements - low hanging power/cable lines, tree-lined driveways, archways ... and don’t simply assume because one type of truck made it in, that another will. A steel-sided dump truck can bash through tree branches whereas a moving van with aluminum sides (thinner than a soup can in many cases!) will get horribly gouged up by those same branches!
Will the movers need to come across some grass or dirt? If so, having some plywood handy to protect the grass may be prudent. Again, feel free to discuss any of these access issues with your move co-ordinator.
No mover really likes to move outdoor plants, yet we all do. Properly preparing them can make all the difference to a successful move. Do not water your plants for a few days before the move. If it is raining/snowing, consider moving outdoor plants to a more sheltered area where they will not become a wet sloppy mess (think: would you want THAT plant next to your shiny white mattress?). Have a supply of larger heavy-duty garbage bags ready in case your mover decides it is best to bag-up the plant/pot to protect your goods from being soiled, or wet dirt from being spilled in your home/back of the moving van (where it could easily transfer onto your other stuff!)
