Some things just do not belong on (or in) a moving truck. Some of these are no-brainers, some are obscure, but all can cause you no end of problems if they are inadvertently packed or loaded onto the moving truck.
Flammables/combustibles - this includes petroleum fuel (gasoline, diesel, propane, kerosene etc), paint thinner, WD-40, solvents, methyl hydrate, matches, lighters, barbeque lighters, sterno. This also includes BBQ tanks (unless they are brand new or purged), gas (jerry) cans that have EVER contained fuel (the vapours are still in there!) and others.
Explosives/compressed gasses - this is a little less intuitive but very common. It includes propane tanks from above, but also many cleaners and personal care items you might not think of - hairspray, air fresheners, spray starch, body sprays, spray paint (if it has a propellent to force it out of the container, it likely falls into this category). Look for the symbols below, described as warnings inside of triangles or octagons - a sunburst (explosive) or flame.
ITEMS BEARING THESE MARKS ARE NON-PERMISSABLE!
Caustics/corrosives - in general these are not allowed, although they may be transported at YOUR OWN RISK at the sole discretion of the van foreman IF they are properly prepared. Common items in this category include household bleach, drain cleaner, common vinegar, some cleaning products. The reasoning here is that an accidental spill of these items in a tightly loaded moving van will result in a large amount of damage to surrounding items. IF your van foreman agrees to transport items in this classification, the proper packing of them is important - secure lids/caps (tape them if necessary) and pack them UPRIGHT into a plastic/rubbermaid tote and CLEARLY label it as “LIQUIDS - KEEP UPRIGHT”
Other/misc - you may not think of these as dangerous, but let me assure you that they can be. If packed and labelled correctly they can be harmless (see above for hints). Some items here include: honey, maple syrup, soy sauce, vinegar, molasses, paint of any kind. Simply imagine any of these things leaking out of their package, seeping/oozing thru the carton they are packed into and then staining/soaking/coating your brand new white sofa... See why they are dangerous?
