Warnings, Cautions and Words of Wisdom
Take all this for what it is worth, my opinion, but I have some real-world experience to back it up.
TAPE YOUR CARTONS SHUT! Folded flaps make the box unstable, and things leak out, or the box squishes. Tape totes/bins with those ‘snap-fit’ lids too, as they tend to pop off.
BAG or WRAP loose/small parts. Use zip-lock bags for things like printer ink cartridges (oh, and while we are at it, REMOVE these from your computer printers before transporting them!)
RENTAL TRUCKS -- check them carefully BEFORE leaving the rental agency. Make sure that mechanical things are all good (to the best of your ability) by looking around/under the truck. Pop the hood, look for leaks, loose things etc. If you are going out of town or one-way, PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO TIRES AND WIPERS!! Try the wipers and washer fluid, tap the horn, try the defroster fan... if you know how to do a proper pre-trip inspection, DO IT! Do test the brakes and other stuff soon after leaving the rental agency and if something is not right, GO DIRECTLY BACK!! Get a replacement truck, or get it fixed! One particular agency (no name... you know!) has a very poor safety record, and has been profiled on several news magazine programs -- there is a reason why they have TOWING INSTRUCTIONS stencilled/decalled on the front bumper!! And as I stated elsewhere, ALWAYS keep a copy of your rental agreement with you -- it has the emergency roadside assistance numbers and truck info on it!
ALWAYS secure your rental truck if parking it overnight, especially while on-route. Consider using a steering wheel club lock, or at least even pulling out some IGNITION FUSES! (don’t lose them tho!)
