The goal of any move or delivery is to safely transport your goods from one location to another.  However, there are some items that due to their very nature are very difficult to transport and guarantee their safe relocation.  Most of these are obvious, some are not.  In this industry, I have seen and heard it all, usually when it has gone somehow wrong.  All moving companies including DTL have a very narrow list of exclusions to our transportation coverage (equivalent of insurance).  If you have any questions, please discuss it with your move coordinator directly, but the following is a general (non-inclusive) list:

Any item that has been previously damaged and/or repaired - by it’s nature, it is now (usually) weaker than it was before it’s structure having been compromised.  There is no real way to be able to assess the QUALITY nor completeness of the previous repair to determine if the item is safe to transport.  Old glue dries out and becomes brittle, retightened screws into a cracked joint do not hold very well.  A tiny chip into the edge of a piece of glass will create a weak spot, regardless of whether that glass is properly packed or not.

Particle board/ready-to-assemble furniture.  You know the stuff -- it starts it’s life in a flat carton and you need to build it yourself.  Most of the time these pieces can be safely transported, but they are not covered for damage in transit or handling.  Tiny brad nails with almost zero holding power into loosely glued material are not a solid piece of furniture.  If any of the dowels/fittings used in assembly are missing or improperly installed, the likelihood of total collapse/disintigration are greatly increased.  A lot of the larger items are also too heavy (under their own weight!) or simply too large (they flex) to load or transport safely (bookcases, wall units, computer armoires/work stations), or most simply they will not fit up a staircase or thru a doorway.
