Glossary and Definition of terms

Agent
Cube
- (1) colloquial term for a small 1-ton/pack van; (2) short for Cubic Feet, a measurement of volume, used to figure out size/space on a moving van/truck or rough size of an object; (3) when used with a number, as in 2-cube, to refer to a specific sized moving carton (common sizes are 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 4.5, 5, 6, 10-12).
Deuce - (1) most commonly a 2-cubic foot carton; (2) 2-ton truck, slightly larger than a pack van.
Dolly - most commonly refers to a flat carpetted 4-wheel dolly, with 4-swivel casters.  Depending on the style of dolly, it may be a frame only, may or may not have strap(s) permanently attached, or may have other fittings.  Infrequently refers to a handtruck.
Equipment Truck - (1) a truck, usually a 1-ton/pack van, used to haul moving equipment/supplies to the job-site and generally not used for transportation of goods; (2) a truck (usually 3-ton size or bigger) used to haul equipment for a sports team, tradeshow or similar (see also luggage truck).
FF&E - (also FF&F) furniture, fixtures and equipment (or fittings).  Industry term for things that go inside a room or house, most commonly used in regard to loading out resort/hotel/restaurant.  In this case it would be the dressers, nightstands, headboard, bedframe, mattress, boxspring, lamps, pictures, desk etc.  May also include soft goods such as towels, sheets etc.  See also OS&E.
Handtruck - an upright dolly, metal or plastic framed with a variable sized blade.  Mainly used for transporting cartons (boxes), but may be used for furniture assuming that the furniture is properly pad-wrapped.
Hoist - the act of physically lifting/lowering an item to or from the level of the truck when access via a staircase or elevator is impractical due to the size/dimensions of that item.  Equipment required may be rope, straps, slings or similar.  The item is usually crated (if new) or specially pad wrapped to protect it while being hoisted.  Most hoists are for 3-storeys or under, as it is not usually practical to go higher.  Hoists require a minimum of 3 people to execute, although larger/heavier/more complicated hoists may utilize up to 8!

OS&E
- operating supplies and equipment.  Similar to FF&E above, this would also include more of the ‘behind-the-scenes’ items such as cleaning supplies, janitorial equipment, and other such
Pack Van - usually a 1-ton sized truck with a 16’ long box, 5.5-8’ high which is most commonly sent on packing jobs to transport material.  Also used as SHUTTLES, or OVERFLOW trucks, or can be used alone for smaller moves.
Piano skid
- a hardwood-framed ‘sled’ with fittings/spaces for piano straps (or logistics straps) which allow a piano or other object to be secured to it.  Carpetted/padded on top surface to protect item.  Frequently used for transporting pianos/organs via staircases.  Not always required for upright/spinet pianos, but almost always used for grand-style pianos.
Piano strap - cotton or nylon webbed strap 1.5-2” in width, used to secure pianos/organs to a piano skid.  Also useful for slinging/carrying mattresses.  Various lengths from 10-20’, double-d rings or roller-cam fittings on one end of strap only.  Used in pairs or trios for pianos.
Ramp - see walkramp or tailgate.  May also refer to a smaller, portable curb-ramp which is used on curbs to allow 4-wheel dollies or handtrucks to more easily traverse a standard curb.
Stair-Carry - loading/unloading involving a flight (or more) of stairs.  Usually included in the cost of local moves (hourly), but may be chargeable on long distance moves (weight-based).
Tag & List - see inventory.
Tailgate
Walkramp
- Metal, fiberglass, composite or wood ramps used primarily to allow access from ground level to the deck of a moving truck/van.  Can also be used singly or in combination to bridge gaps between truck/van and raised entry way, or alternately placed on stairs to minimize the number of stairs for easier use with a handtruck.  Available in various lengths and widths, may be one piece or spit into halves (mainly for loading vehicles).  Surfaces usually have some form of traction aid to reduce slipping.  Most common lengths for trucks are 12’ (for small cube vans/pack vans/1-tons), 14’ (lower moving vans/trucks, or shorter box lengths) and 16’ (most common for full-sized moving vans/trucks).
